Nature Boy, Part Deux

Nov 7, 2001 - © Sharon Wren

It's been insanely warm here for the first part of November; sometimes it snows on Halloween yet it's been in the 60s and 70s lately. (Watch, now that I've said that, it'll snow tomorrow) Since the weather has been so fabulous, I've been taking Logan with me on my critter feeding route. Filling the bird feeders isn't much fun for a 2 year old because Mama won't let him do it. If I did, one of two things would happen - he'd fill the feeders one piece of seed at a time or he'd throw the seed everywhere but in the feeders. Now, going down to the riverbank is a different story. The first time he went down there with me was a big adventure. Sure he'd been there before, but that was last year, back in the good old days when I could get him in a stroller. I'd been looking forward to when I could take him with me and I decided the other day that it was time. The baby was asleep in the house and Logan was already running around the yard so I filled up the big white bucket with corn and called for him. He toddled over as fast as he could and off we went.

There were probably 20 ducks down at the edge of the river that day - apparently the geese have decided that they're too good to come around here anymore. Whatever. As we got closer I pointed to them and said, "look honey, duckies!" Logan took one look at them, shouted, "DUCK" at the top of his lungs and took off running. To him, they were neat new toys. I can only imagine what the ducks thought.

"Hey, here comes that people duck. What's that little thing with her?"

"Must be one of the ducklings. Look, they're holding wings."

"What's he saying?"

"I don't know, but he's coming at us full tilt with that 'I'm gonna hug you' look on his face - RUN!"

Ducks went flying and swimming in every direction, with Logan in hot pursuit and Mommy in hot pursuit of him. Yes it was a nice day, but not nice enough for a dip in the Mighty Muddy Mississippi. That, and Logan can't swim yet and I'm not very good myself (go ahead, make jokes about the idiot who lives on an island and can't swim). I caught up to him about 6 feet from the water and patiently explained that little boys can't go running into the river. He gave me that "sure Mommy" look and headed right back towards the water. Finally I told him that rivers were just like bathtubs and reminded him that he hates baths. That did the trick - for now.
