Lively Lizard Tales

I don't know where each of you who are reading this article resides nor do I know if you have lizards in your part of the world. But I can tell you that in the sunshine state, Florida, there must be a trazillion living in my front yard alone!

I'm not talking about the iguanas or komodo types, I'm referring to those little teeny tiny ones that can be sitting on your step one second and the next be half way up a wall.

They are so fast! They're just like miniature scooters zipping in and out of the foliage at rush hour. Never ceases to amaze me how much territory these guys and gals cover in a short amount of time.

I find lizards to be fascinating creatures to observe. They are very entertaining. What is all that pouch puffing and head nodding about anyway? Is that some sort of secret language code? Do the guys do this to attract the lady lizards languishing under the pothos plant? Is this a guy thing where they are exerting their lizardly muscles to shoo away any lizards interested in poaching his territory among the ferns? Maybe it's a way of saying "howdy", welcome to Lizard Lagoon condos; pull up a lily leaf and stay awhile.

I have black lizards, gray lizards, and brown lizards. I've actually seen an albino frog but that's another story.

If you watch them, they have no fear of much of anything. They do have a huge curiosity of what's going on around them. I had one sitting beside me yesterday as I sat on my porch step eating a sandwich. He's like, "hey, where's mine?" I was going to share but, of course, he zipped off into the underbrush and then appeared by my feet. If you don't know this about lizards, they just love cat food. Any brand, any flavor, canned or dry. You put it out and they will come.

My mom is terrified of lizards. They sit on her deck and peer in the door while she eats dinner. It's really comical. Or they hang on the screen door at eye level and just stare or they traverse the perimeter of her door. She won't go outside if one's sitting there. She'll go out the front and walk all the way round the house. She's afraid it will "jump" on her if she steps over it. I do have to admit she has some extremely unusual ones that look prehistoric living in her yard.
