Recently, my niece Erica, spent the day at Big Cat Rescue with her two charges, Shannon, 12 and Connor, 10.
BigCat, formerly Wildlife on Easy Street, is a sanctuary dedicated to exotic wild cats here in Tampa. I thought you might like to share her experience as she takes us through the day the three of them spent at this home for over 200 exotic and endangered felines. V: Tell me what impressed you most about BigCat Rescue? E: How close you were to the animals. Even though you're so close to the cats, I wasn't afraid and neither were the kids. V: Which big cats did you see? E: First was Shera Khan the 700 pound Bengal tiger. Then we saw mountain lions, a black panther, leopards, lynx, and a lioness. There were so many! V: What did Connor and Shannon have to say about it? E: They had a blast and took a lot pictures. Connor, who is not always very attentive, listened to everything the tour guide had to say. They really enjoyed the tour. V: Did you feel this was a learning experience? E: Absolutely. And not just for me but for all of us. The tour guide was very thorough and we learned about the cats, what they ate and their individual personalities. V: What about the enclosures. Did you find them humane? E: Yes, definitely. They were very natural looking. Not artificial in any way. They were good sized enclosures with rocks and trees and the acreage the sanctuary is built on is very shady so the cats have plenty of cool places to nap and aren't exposed to direct sunlight all day. V: Do you know about the volunteer program available at BigCat? E. Yes and the tour guide kept trying to get me to join. He explained about the training a volunteer goes through and how they learn to work with the cats including feeding them! It's definitely something I'd like to be invovled in. V: How was the tour itself? E: The tour guide talked to everyone, very attentive. He made it very interesting, not bland. It was not boring at all. He answered all of our questions and didn't rush through any of it. V: What time was the tour? E: They have both morning and afternoon tours and I would recommend going to the morning tour. It started at 9 a.m. while it was still cool. The afternoon would be too hot. V: Would you go again? E: Yes. I've been wanting to go back. While we were there, they had a male lion in guarantine and I want to go back and see him now that he's out. Go To Page: 1 2
