The list of endangered and threatened wild cats is ever growing. In an effort to help spread the word about the plight of these beautiful creatures, this months article focuses on many organizations, both local and world wide, that are endeavoring to make a difference before these cats become extinct.
Many of these sites ask that you "get involved" and whether it's through donations, purchasing goods, volunteering your time, or adoption of a cat, your help is needed. On a small scale, I volunteer at a local pet supply store catering to the needs of domestic animals along wild birds, squirrels, etc. but they also work in conjunction with the National Humane Society in the adoption of feral, abused, orphaned, and homeless cats. One of their sponsors is Big Cat Rescue, a non-profit organization devoted to the care of over 200 endangered wild cats many of which are listed on the endangered species list. I wrote about Big Cat last month and the wonderful work they've been doing since 1992. Their contribution was to donate a cattery that was erected inside the store and houses the felines up for adoption. My job is to spend time with the cats and give them hands on human interaction, love and attention. I also have helped with preparing supplies for upcoming surgeries offered at the mobile medical clinic by the Humane Society. Whether we're talking about the smallest domestic cat to the great Siberian tiger, all species can use help. The Feline Conservation Center, located in Rosamond, CA-http://www.cathouse-fcc.org is another non-profit organization dedicated to helping endangered cats. They are involved in cooperative breeding programs with other zoos worldwide to help ensure the preservation of endangered cats. Currently, the center is home to over 70 species. Check this link for a listing of their residents and be sure to look at the pictures. They are all so beautiful! http://www.cathouse-fcc.org/photos.html UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Center - http://www.unep-wcmc.org/index.html offers a current listing of threatened and endangered animals as well as plants. A great source of information. Cat Survival Trust, - http://members.aol.com/cattrust/index.htm located in the UK, is mainly concerned with the habitat of wild cats. Their goal is conservation of existing habitat and establishing a new reserve in Argentina with hopes of reintroducing the Jaguar to this area. Performing Animals Welfare Society - http://www.pawsweb.org/. The name speaks for itself. This sanctuary, established in 1984 by animal trainer Pat Derby and co-founder Ed Stewart, is home to abused or abandoned animals that work in movies and television and also to wild animals that have fallen victim to the exotic wild animal trade. In October of last year, the society rescued 3 Siberian tiger cubs from the fate of being sold. Read their story here: http://www.pawsweb.org/site/news/index.h...
