out of someone who thinks it is an easy path. Do I go to the movie or do I go to my teaching circle? YOu have to be willing to sacrifice things like this. We have found the formalizations of titles and degrees helpful to us, in the sense that it gives a person a tangible goal to work towards. I compare it to belts in Karate, and we actually do have different colored cords for each level. It is for you OWN personal benefit, and in our coven you can be initiated, but decide never to pursue further degrees if you so choose. The higher degrees are for people who feel called some day to be doing what I am doing , those who will lead the 'next generation' so to speak. You can be a priest/ess unto youself, and indeed all in our coven are a priest or priestess...but to guide others takes a deeper commitment, one that not all feel ready to undertake or are even supposed to. So it is a marking of persoanl growth and spiritual growth. You are recognized within our tradition as that 'level' and while it is not a hard and fast rule in the general community, if you say I am 3rd degree, people expect certain things from you, so you really should be what you say you are! There are a good many novices who can't wait to get there hands on the title of HP/s or Lady/Lord. They see the 'power of the Gods', they see the 'glory' and the 'admiration'. They want those things for themselves. They think that leading a group is the best way to raise their self worth and esteem by making themselves look good, feel better, and receive power and respect from others. What they don't see are the endless hours of work, the time, the stress, the heartache at times. What they don't realize is you do not choose this, you are chosen by the Gods. That is why the title Lady is only given to each 3rd degree HPs who has her own coven. It is an honor title, and in circle is used to link the HPs even further with the Goddess. It is a sign of respect for her. I use it formally, with people I do not know, and within the circle. I drop it after I have met
