Writing Rituals

as doing a Maypole Dance for Beltane. I would limit your activity to one or two things here, as you don't really want to be in ritual all night. Simple, to-the-point activities are usually best. "Spiral Dance" and Scott Cunningham's "Living Wicca" are two good beginner books with ideas for each Sabbat. You can also check out the links in my "Wheel of the Year 101" articles, or thumb through the Sabbat-specific books in stores.

Esbat (moon) rituals can be a little harder to plan, since you don't automatically have a theme to work with. In my coven, each of us takes a monthly moon ritual or two and develops a theme and purpose. This allows us to explore a lot of topics and share the workload more or less equally. Working alone, you may want to do more simple things. This is the perfect time to do spell work, or consecrate ritual tools, or perform healings, for example. If you can't think of anything specific to do, but still wish to have ritual, you could just meditate here, or talk with the Gods. If you have difficulty regularly coming up with purposes for moon rituals, then perhaps you should only work when you have something to do. I don't tend to do regular workings on my own at home because of this problem, though doing things on a regular schedule is helpful for developing your skills.

By eating and drinking, you pull your focus back to the physical. Plus, you can replenish your personal energies. I tend to feel a bit drained after raising energy, and having some cookies and juice boosts up my blood sugar and helps me stay focused.

Anything you have on hand can readily become cakes and ale. I've done ritual with fruit and fruit juice. I've done ritual with wine and bread. I've even done ritual with Coke and Oreos because that's all we could find in the house. Choose something seasonal, if you can. Apple cider is a nice choice for fall rituals, while fresh strawberries and grapes are good in
