Centering, Grounding, Visualization, and Meditation

Once you've learned how to find your center, you can begin to explore the process of grounding. If you're familiar at all with electrical systems, then you already understand the process of grounding. It's the same for you or I as it is for an electrical socket. The ground wire dumps excess energy in the circuit into the ground. When an energy worker grounds, he or she dumps excess energy into the ground as well. The most common way to do this is by sitting down on the ground and letting this energy drain out of the bottom of your spine. You can visualize yourself sprouting roots into the ground to carry this energy away. You can also visualize energy grounding out of you through your feet, if you're standing.

Grounding serves two purposes. First, it allows you to slough off any excess energy prior to beginning your work. If you're all stressed out from your commute home, grounding and centering will allow you to let go of these tensions so you can focus on what's to come. Second, it allows you to let any excess energies raised during your working to drain back into the environment. Energy work can be intense at times, and if you don't "earth" this power after finishing, you can end up feeling strung out or disjointed. It isn't a very comfortable feeling, I can assure you. The easiest technique for grounding after a working is to lie down on the floor and let the energies drain right out of you. Feel the ground taking them in.

Since I mentioned visualization in my discussion on grounding, let's talk about that next. Visualization is a fancy word for "pretend", though this is the sort of pretending you did back when you were a kid playing. Kids believe that what they're pretending is true, at least for the confines of their play. A tree becomes a pirate ship, or a mountain lair. A playground can become a house. This is the sort of visualizing energy workers do. When I talk of visualizing roots growing down out of the base of my spine, I don't just see this happening in my head. I feel it, too, because I believe in it. Now, of course I'm not literally growing roots, and we could probably debate whether or not I'm literally growing energy connections. None of that really matters in my practices of grounding.
