How "Out" is Out of the Broom Closet? - Page 3

Much of this advice applies to the workplace. If you work in a fairly liberal environment, no one may object to your pentacle necklace, or the small statue and unlit votive candles on your desk. Always be aware of your company’s policy regarding such things. If you work in a machine shop and you are not allowed to wear dangling jewelry, no amount of attempting to buck the system will grant you the freedom to wear a pentacle necklace at work. It’s a safety issue.

Know the atmosphere of your workplace before coming out to anyone. While it’s true that an employer cannot fire you because they don’t like your religion, it is pretty easy for them to find other more subtle ways to do it, including “you just don’t fit in with the team”. If your livelihood is at stake, being publicly out is a bad idea. After all, you need to eat, pay bills, and keep a roof over your head. Certainly, those things are more important than whether you can have a “Pagan and Proud” bumper sticker pinned up to your cubicle wall.

The bottom line in all this is that only you can know your situation. Not telling someone about your faith doesn’t mean you’re compromising what you believe in. Religion is a private thing and sometimes it really isn’t anyone else’s business what you do or how you do it. Only you can be sure if telling your mother-in-law that you’re Wiccan will be a good thing, or if it will cause her to think that you’re raising the children to be devil worshippers and drive a huge spike of discord into the family. This, as with anything else in Paganism, is a personal thing where only you will know where to draw the lines.
