It was perhaps logical that Macaulay would choose to next reprise the role that had made him a star. But Home Alone 2: Lost in New York was merely a poor imitation of its predecessor, copying the original at almost every turn. It earned nearly $280 million in worldwide box office dollars, but that wasn't enough to revive Macaulay's lagging career. He needed a hit. Fast.

The Good Son paired Macaulay with another promising young actor -- Elijah Wood. Macaulay played the bad son in the film, a troublemaking boy reminiscent of Damien in the Omen movies. The film grossed less than $50 million.

1994's Richie Rich seemed the perfect film for Macaulay. But he was growing so fast the wardrobe department had to keep adjusting his clothing to fit. It was a small symptom of the overall problem -- what does Hollywood do with a former adorable child actor who is becoming a not-so-adorable teenager? The answer came after 1994's Getting Even With Dad: absolutely nothing.

Macaulay has literally not acted onscreen since 1994. He finished high school and married actress Rachel Miner once the two of them reached eighteen, but the marriage lasted less than two years.

Macaulay has recently jumped back into the spotlight, performing on the London stage in Madame Melville to full audiences and fairly good critical reviews. It's possible Macaulay is attempting to work his way back into Hollywood by first gaining its respect and maybe reminding them, along the way, just what it was they loved about him in the first place.
