Makin' 8 Silver Buckle Rodeo Red Deer, Albertaa row of seats at the rail for media use but the major problem with the fencing is that there's very little room for camera and flash to squeeze between rails. Additionally, access to this area was unrestricted so that we were constantly being bumped or stepped on by spectators, especially near the rodeo's end. Patrick noticed an area directly above the chutes which was roped off from the general public and provided an interesting perspective so we shot some film from there as well. Announcer, Pete Montana, reprised his duties from Roughstock along with Dave Poulsen to provide entertaining background to the roughly 5,000 spectators for Saturday night's final. Pickup duties were handled by Bruce Flewelling and Blake Schlosser while Bullfighters, Jason Hale & Jason Davidson were on hand for cowboy protection duties as local barrel man, Dennis Halstead, entertained the crowd, contstantly noting how photographers managed to "get in for free". Immediately following the rodeo was a CMT video dance party. However we
were tired and hungry so we stopped for a late dinner at an Earl's restaurant,
one of the rodeo sponsors and one of the few restaurants open beyond 11:30pm.
In Canada, Earl's has a reputation for good food and excellent service and our
server, La Keria, didn't let us down. Pat ordered a huge platter of
chicken fingers while Reidar had a baked Chinook Salmon. I opted for a
simple cheeseburger with loads of extra mushrooms. The meal was a
satisfying conclusion to a long day of windows, road and rodeo.
