The New Western Galactic Arm

When we look back at 2002, we, as future citizens of the Western Arm of the Galactic Empire. We will be grateful, and at the same in awe of the possibilities that reared themselves.

We must first and foremost consider the DVD.

It seems only to be a circular piece of plastic that shines in the sun and reveals rainbows of colour on the wall. It also makes a nice crunch as we step on the duds that we have purchased. Unlike glass, it does not shatter, but merely turn into nice arcs with irregular edges.

But, it is more than that.

Contained within it's circular paths are dots, dashes, and combinations thereof. Like Pandora's Box, there are mysteries to behold. With the proper decoders, we can transform this mystical media into myriads of magical dioramas inhabited by celluloid giants.

Be they Sony, Samsung, Toshiba, Radio Shack, or Phillips, these decoders can bring to our senses wonderful images that are crisp and clear, vibrant sound that echoes (echoes) and resounds.

For the special effects, we can sometimes be thankful. We, as appreciators and spectators in this new digital realm, can find the gems in the bits and bytes presented to us willing (or not) consumers.

But ye, over the horizon, another dimension beckons. As we find ourselves drawn to the Satellite world of 'nostalgia', we feel a strong pull to record these images for later consumption and enjoyment. Verily, the ability of consumers to record our 'memories' is about to burst out in a flood of colour and splash.

Like VHS before, the CDR and recordable DVD will transform our enjoyment of our youth and the media of the past.

But, on the third day of Abercrombie, another looming giant appears. The Big Budget Western will make a return to our screens. Tom Selleck, the cosmic sun burnt cowboy, will revive Monte Walsh along with TNT. Zorro will ride again as Antonio Banderas rides in "Zorro Unmasked". Disney will assault our senses with "Home On The Range" in December 2003. Other western sagas will come our way as Ron Howard prepares his dust filled dream. The Alamo may make an appearance on our screens.

The vaults of the past will open further, and the historians will lovingly restore and revive the classics of the past Galactic Empire, when B Westerns ruled the roost. Yes, for a 2nd time, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Rex Allen, Hopalong Cassidy, Allan Rocky Lane and our Western comrades are beaming out their Thundering hoofbeats out towards Pleides, and beyond.
