Moving Day: Loss or Gain?

One of the problems of possessing a collection of really cool things is that of moving. Having recently done so, I can appreciate the wisdom that those have moving companies possess.

So, to get to the point of this column, Moving is difficult, and if you do not take care of your belongings, great losses can occur.

My situation was like this. We had found out that we were moving across town, and we as a result were excited. I spent the month before the move packing boxes, labeling boxes, and stacking the boxes in a corner. The day of the move came, and our help came. I showed a friend my Lone Ranger original comic artwork, and put it in a drawer. By the time we moved, and put the drawers away, the artwork was gone! I was shattered, but out of this, I have to learn something.

And this is it. Be careful. If you have to move a precious item, do it yourself, and do it right. You'll be glad you did.

Some things that I should have done:

1. Pack your boxes securely.

2. Label the top clearly (living room, bathroom)

3. List the box items on a separate list if applicable

4. If you can be insured, do it

5. If you can afford a professional mover, get one

6. Move the precious items yourself

I hope this helps you avoid loss of any items that you may have.
