Legendary Sons-Legendary FathersFathers. Sons. It has been said that some men are born great, while others have it thrust upon them. Everyone else nurtures their God-given talents, and become great. But what happens if your father happens to be, say Roy Rogers, Rex Allen, Billy Graham, or Harry Carey? Hence, the title. We read of many successful men and women in North America, who upon their retirement, or passing leave a legacy to their children only to have their reputation tarnished, blemished, and most often ruined. Numerous examples come to mind, check out any tabloid. After the passing of Roy Rogers in 1998, the mantle of the leadership of the Rogers family fell to Dusty, Roy Rogers Junior. Even prior to Roy's death, Dusty had led the museum, and many of the public appearances of his famous father. He had learned quality of character from Roy and Dale, and has proved worthy of the honour he now carries. He came out from under the shadow of Roy, and has now lengthened it, adding his interpretation and leadership. The family has not fallen from God's grace, but has joined together to continue on in a Godly tradition. Rex Allen Junior, Dusty's friend, has also carried on in the Allen tradition. Touring with his father for much of his career, he set out in the 1970's, recording many best selling albums. He hosted a TV show on TNN until the early 1990's, and now travels North America entertaining legions of western fans. His soundtrack to Rustlers Rhapsody, The Last of the Silver Screen Cowboys featured Roy, Rex Jr. and SR went on to become a hit. From Rex's constant touring until the 1960's, and his model life and character, Rex Jr. learned from a good example, and has continued to set one of his own. Live, he puts on an excellent show, and his father shines through, to the blessing of us all. Harry Carey SR, was the best of his day. Stuntman, Actor, Director, father, he was good at what he did. From the early silent movies of the 1920's to his last movie, he exemplified class-in effort and result. Respected industry wide, he and his son appeared in what was his last movie, passing on the baton. Harry Carey Jr. appeared in the beginning, and SR, in the end. After that point, Harry Carey Jr. forged his own destiny, appearing on TV shows such as the Lone Ranger, and on the big screen lately in the Last Stand at Saber Creek. Once again, integrity flowed through the generations.
