Wow! Isn't That a ...

© Tim Lasiuta

We have all done it at least once in our lives.

Really, at least once.

That's right, walked by a table, packed to the top with books, magazines, toys, tools, or, hockey cards! You took one look, reached over, and VOILA! The _______ you've been looking for!

You look around, hoping no one else will see you giggle with glee, sweat with excitement, and then willingly pay the pittance of a price marked on the item.

"If only they knew how VALUABLE this is?" you say to yourself in the car/van/truck as you drive home clutching your find with your right hand.

"If only they knew how long I've been searching for one of these. I have 1, 2, and 4, but not 3! Yipee!"

If you are a collector, you have experienced this.
One weekend, in Saskatoon, I found 3 Lone Ranger Hardcover novels! That's right, not on Ebay, in a city of 200,000! 3! What were the odds? For over a year I'd been searching for a hardcover only to find that I couldn't find one.

Then 3. WOW! Awesome.

One other weekend, I found a first print Tarzan of the Apes-A L Burt edition, for only $10. I was only looking for a year for this book, and then... BANG.

So what makes this joy? What happens if you get too much joy?

Folks, serendipity smiles upon you! The accidental discovery never gets old, or boring! The secret to continual joy is looking for different things.
I collect Books, Comics, Artwork, Movies, Tapes, Figurines, Pictures, Autographs, Interviews, and you see. I can always find one new thing to revel in.

Don't be caught by being too streamlined. Diversify-fill the corner in your garage with more stuff, use that old book shelf, clean that closet out, then fill it up. When your spaces are full, find new ones, build a shed, rent a storage spot, buy a scanner and scan the picture into your hardrive, then share your stuff with your net friends, You could find something you might be able to trade for, if you are willing to part with the box of screws Michael Jordan once touched during the 1998 NBA finals.

So, whether you collect little things, big things, or just things in general. Wait, wait, wait. One of these days, lightning will strike, and you will be happy. You will find the holy grail of collectionism!
