Rex Allen-A Man To Remember
Featured guests were Roy Rogers Jr (with the High Riders), Rex Allen Sr, and Jr, Richard Farnsworth, Dale Robertson (Tales of Wells Fargo, Death Valley Days), and Johnny Western (Paladin theme song). Events included the rodeo, pioneer award, concerts by Roy Rogers Jr, and Rex Allen Sr, parade with marshall Rex, school visits, radio interviews, panels with the stars. Roy Rogers Jr. and Rex Allen Jr. held a panel discussion regarding famous fathers and their children. The highlight of the event was the Rex Allen Charity concert-enjoyed by all.
Rex, in an interview, said that this was the best ever, and he was "spoiled to death!" From all acounts, anyone whom attended was too.
His death in December 1999 came as a surprise.
On December 17, 1999 Rex Allen Sr died of a heart attack. For the last year of his life, his health had not been good. His vision was going, he had had a bypass operation, but still continued to work for Arizona charities.
He had moved to Tuscon earlier in the year from his ranch for health reasons.
A well attended memorial was held in Willcox, on January 4, 2000. Friends said farewell, his family accepted sympathies, and they all paid honour to a man whom they all called Rex.
In Willcox Arizona, the Rex Allen museum stands as a tribute to the man who never fell from his roots. His horse, Koko, stands guard, and Rex, in a bronze statue awaits the next visitor.
