The Writing of Kirby Jonas

As a member of the Western Writers of America, I was privileged to be a member of a group that included Louis Lamour, Zane Grey, Cotton Smith, Johnny Boggs, Don Coldsmith, and so many accomplished authors. One of the treasures of the group is Kirby Jonas, a long-time writer, musician, and artist. Writing since sixth grade, his novels have been praised by celebrities and other professionals. Add my Yee Ha to that. Not only has he written solo, but Clint Walker has begun his 2nd collaboration with him! But, don't just call him Renaissance Cowboy, call him fire fighter, policeman, and security guard. I call him something different, I call him Amigo, compadre, and fellow trail rider.

His books include: Season of the Vigilante, The Bloody Season
Season of the Vigilante, Season's End
The Dansing Star
Legend of the Tumbleweed
Lady Winchester
Disciples of the Wind
Yaqui Gold (with Clint Walker)

Of his published novels, I have read two, Lady Winchester, and The Dansing Star. Lady Winchester tells the story of Kate Winchesters coming to term with the dead men in her life. Ira Winchester, her husband, is shot and in the few weeks following she enlists the aid of brave men to rescue her son from brigands, and confronts the demons in her past. One man returns to restore her future, and the future of Blackfoot. Jam packed with small vignettes of rural western life, he has written a compelling novel worthy of the moniker, the New Louis Lamour!

Dansing Star tells the story of Mort Dansing, a man lost between two worlds, the Apache and the White mans'. When his Apache village is destroyed and his wife murdered, he returns to 'civilization' to find the man who destroyed his life. Failing to bring in a gang of bank robbers as Deputy Sheriff, he is challenged to restore his reputation on the hunt for his friends' killers. His Apache past comes to haunt him as 30 Apache warriors surround him and five others. Both sides want him dead, and only his survival skills can save him.

What makes Kirby unique in the western literature realm?

When you pick up a Jonas book, you notice a couple of things. Firstly, the cover art is done by Kirby himself. An accomplished painter, his work has garnered much national interest. Secondly, Howling Wolf Publishing is Kirby Jonas. Thirdly, his desire for authenticity is endless. If it couldn't happen, it won't happen in a Kirby Jonas tale. Fourthly, when you open up his web page at www.kirbyjonas.com, he hasn't really grown up. He likes Johnny West, has audio novels narrated by James Drury, and writes poetry and short stories.
