Mountains
November Booty...From Dorchester Books

As Fall starts to whimper to a close, and the evening shade comes earlier and earlier, I sit down to write about the newest batch of westerns from Dorchester. This month's selection is unusual in that three of four are reprints, and the cover art is better than usual.

So, without further jawing, I'll get right to the reviews.

New Fiction

Mountains Against the Sun-Perry Holmes Like his father before him, he's a writing man. L P Holmes was a prolific author with some 600 short stories and 50 novels to his credit, and Perry is following in those large footsteps. Mountains Against The Sun finds Frank Allard on the trail of the man who shot his best friend in the back. Finding himself in Utah territory, his path leads to a tight knit clan who protect their own no matter what the cost. Can Allard bring the murderer to justice against all odds? Holmes spins a great tale that shows that talent can be hereditary. Three bullets up!

Classic Authors

Reunion At Cottonwood Station-T T Flynn

From the Ken Laager (I think) cover to the four exciting tales from the pen of Flynn, this book is a don't put me down-thriller! The stories date from Dime Western in 1935 ('Brothers of the Owlhoot', and 'Outlawed'), from West ('Rodeo's A Man), and the title novelette 'Reunion At Cottonwood Station' from 1951. Like any Flynn tale, they are well written, and action packed. My favorite, 'Owlhoot,' just sparkles with hints of brilliance that I could only hope to have as a writer!

The Tyrant-Max Brand

Tyrannical fathers are not new in fiction, yet Max Brand takes this age old theme and adds the characteristic Brand twist to keep you following Jean Limousin in his flight from his father. While Jean excelled at the skills that his father, Francois, struggled to teach his older son, he soon finds that his very survival depends on them. Revenge can be so desperate, and have such a long grasp, and Jean finds that he must become his own man inspite of his father!

The Untamed West-L'Amour, Grey, Brand

Editor Jon Tuska, in his effort to preserve the best of western fiction, has pulled together three of the best stories from the most popular authors of our day. 'Black Sheep' from Brand, 'Canon Walls' from Grey, and 'Showdown on the Hogback' from L'Amour represent the golden age of western fiction. From the splendid cover, the grey lettering, to the short biographical pieces that precede each tale, this book is a keeper! Well done, Jon!
