The Thunderbirds

The Thunderbirds are part of history. Whether you remember them as Gerry Anderson marionettes, or the cool vehicles they used in their adventures, they were not your average everyday heroes.

Whatever they were then, they are now better. Significantly. My 12-year-old son was glued to the TV set he enjoyed the DVD so much. I asked him why he liked it so much, but in his jumbled answer, all I understood was "It's cool!"

I would have to agree. The marionettes were good for their time--no, great for their time. To properly produce an entertaining, engaging show with marionettes even then was technically daunting. Today, we would use CGI, and the equivalent result would look like Sky Captain. But, as a live action film, this works extremely well. The CGI ships and special effects do add to the film, but it is the human interaction that keeps you watching, as my son (and even wife) demonstrated.

Director/producer Jonathan Frakes and writers Peter Hewitt/William Osborne created a film that showcased the talents of Bill Paxton, Anthony Edwards, Sophia Miles and Ben Kingsley (The Hood). The plot revolves around the efforts of 'The Hood' to rob the world's richest banks, and the efforts of the Thunderbirds to thwart the evil plan. Great action, great stunts, and best of all, it's a film that the whole family can enjoy.

The DVD has some different special features that include 'The Ultimate Action Sequence', the secrets of Tracy Island, a documentary on Fab 1, Lady Penelope's Pink World, a music video and optional director's commentary; all great fun for the new Thunderbird fan.
