Deep from the mountain journal of the King and Shakespeare McNair families, David Thompson has drawn an incredible tale that begs you to hang around for the next installment. Wilderness #43, Vengeance, starts with young Zach and Louisa King celebrating his recent court victory. What they don't know is that the Borke brothers had a sister, Athena, who would stop at nothing to see Zach punished for their death. In a murderous fashion, she kills five jurors and a lawyer in her quest to silence her role in the plot. Treating Zach and Louisa to the "Amistad," she plots to kill King slowly. However, a good mountain man never rolls over and dies. Zach surprises Athena's man servant, about the same time as Louisa is being trailed by a military man who is watching them. Before long, Zach is in a death battle, and Louisa arrives at the hotel.
Well, I could tell you more, but I will not. Suffice to say, the book is worth a read. Read the whole series. What the heck, read Fang and Claw, too. David Thompson is a talented writer who keeps you reading. The King and McNair families are central to the books, but retain a humor in addition to their deep honor and loyalty to their friends. While reading Vengeance, I ran across the following passage: "Then there was Louisa. Some days she was the sweetest woman alive. Other days, she made him question whether taking her as his wife was his smartest thing he ever did or the dumbest. She could be kind and supportive one minute, carping at him the next. Pick up your clothes. Chew with his mouth shut. Don't leave his weapons lying on the floor. Clean the floor when he spilt something. Don't put his cold feet against her legs at night. Don't kiss her hair right after eating honey. Don't wake her up by pulling on her nipples. And on and on it went." Page 111 Boy, I guess even mountain women have their standards. Talking to Dorchester/Leisure, it turns out that the "Wilderness" series is their most popular. They have reprinted many of the early books, and have prepared for the eventual release of the entire series. To find out more about "Wilderness," you can go to www.dorchersterpub.com and look for the series; to purchase #43, you can go to the Suite 101 Book store. Either way, enter the "Wilderness."
