February Bookshelf

Well, February is here. The bills from Christmas are in the mail, and hopefully paid. The snow we all tell our kids 'When we were young' is nothing, is disappearing, at least where I am now. And Dorchester, and Kensington have done their bit to entertain us western readers!

Western Heritage Authors

Ghost Brand of the Wishbones - Peter Dawson
'Ghost Brand' collects three classic tales by Peter Dawson, 'Sagerock Sheriff', 'Hell's Half Acre', and 'Ghost Brand of the Wishbones', the title story. 'Sagerock Sheriff' tells the story of Tom Platt, and his efforts to find out why the man serving life was framed. 'Hell's Half Acre' puts the reader right in the middle of a cattleman-sheepman range war, and the danger just starts there. An entire trainload of cattle is stolen in 'Ghost Brand', and the county becomes a battle field. Originally presented from 1939-1941 in the Western pulps, we can be thankful that Leisure Books has continued to promote the art of the western novel.

Top Hand - Zane Grey
Zane Grey weaves a tale of the Southwest range in 'Top Hand'. Panhandle Smith, top ranch hand, returns home for a visit only to find that his family has moved, and his childhood sweetheart close to marrying against her will. After traveling that far, and working so long to fulfill his dream, he was not about to lose Lucy without a fight! Hardman, an unscrupulous rancher, stands in his way. Push comes to shove, and someone has to win!

Contemporary Authors

Ride To Banshee Canon - James C Work
James C Work, in 'Ride To Banshee Canon', has written a masterful novel of redemption, adventure, and renewal. The one eyed cowboy, Kyle Owen, sets out on a quest to fill in the gaps of his life much to the objections of almost everyone around him. A great novel, by a good writer that will keep the pages turning until you find out....

The Big Fifty - Johnny D Boggs
Spur Award winner, Johnny D Boggs, has done it again! In 'The Big Fifty', Coady McIvain revels in the adventures of Buffalo Bill Cody, and after his escape from the Comanches who killed his father, he travels and discovers that life is not a dime store novel. From the great cover by Ken Legaar, this book is a winner.

As a side note, Ken Legaar maintains a website, www.kenlegaar.com, and is one heck of a nice guy!
