Metal Horses I Have Known II

Some time ago, I reviewed 'Metal Horse Collections' by Carolyn Martin. Much to my delight, she has already issued a spinoff of this landmark collectors book. The first was published in 2001, and contained metal horse figurines plus many various items with a metal horse motif. With the feedback of her collector friends, and readers, the new edition, 'Metal Horse Figurines', is quite an improvement. It features figurines only, almost 1000 of them!

Model horses are amongst the most common of all collectible animals. Companies like Breyer have made horses the mainstay of their products, and the many other manufacturers always have equestrian models in their line up. In Carolyn Martin's quest for collectible metal horses, she has uncovered an incredible wealth of products, and diversity of quality. As I mentioned in my review, 'Metal Horses I Have Known', the pioneering work she has done is truly welcome.

From the front cover design by fellow cowboy pal, Leo Pando, to the extensive index covering manufacture marks, logos, countries, copyrights, and important people and reference works covering the hobby, this work is more user friendly. The introduction covering metal types, storage of collections, purchasing online and at shows, and other useful topics is expanded, and reflects her valuable experience.

The topics covered by the over 1000 photographs include Art/Souvenir/Toys, Carnival Horses, Western Tack, English Tack, Cowboys (including some good information about the Roy Rogers and Trigger School Award statue), Native Americans, and Jockeys. I was pleased to learn about Gladys Brown (Edwards), and will surely be on the look out for her work as over 100 of her works of metal are included in the book. Some of the photos are not quite up to par, as they seem to be low resolution originals, but I am sure, by the time she gets to a third book, they will be all even in quality. I am very impressed with this unique reference work and highly recommend it to any one who collects Metal Horse Figurines.
