Back In The Saddle
by Gary A Yoggy Gary Yoggy must have had a great childhood! First he writes the near definitive reference book on TV Westerns, 'Riding the Video Range', then he collaborates with James Drury and 10 eminent scholars in 'Back In The Saddle'. In 'Back In the Saddle', Gary has gathered essays on the definitive cowboys that shaped the western genre. Bronco Billy, Tom Mix, Buck Jones, Tex Ritter, Roy Rogers, James Stewart, Barbara Stanwyck, Steve McQueen, James Arness, and the 'Indians' are discussed in this educating collection. Each essay is written by scholars who clearly love the genre and its characters. The different essays combine information from numerous sources (identified by bibliography) and feature well chosen photographs. As a fan of the stars discussed, I truly enjoyed the fresh look at some of the familiar faces and names. Roy Rogers, the King of the Cowboys, and Trigger greet you from the cover, and a world of knowledge and happy remembrances greet you as you read the 200 plus pages. This book is a great companion to 'Riding the Video Range', also available from McFarland. 'Back In the Saddle' is available from My Bookstore at Suite 101, online from McFarland at www.mcfarlandpub.com, and better bookstores everywhere. The Edward G Robinson Encyclopedia by Robert Beck [littlecaesar.jpe] One of my favourite actors of all time is Edward G Robinson. The first time I saw him in 'Little Caesar', I knew that I had found a genius. When I watched him in his later pictures, I realized that his incredible versatility was underused by Hollywood. The more I learned about him from this Encyclopodia, and his biography 'My Father, My Son', I learned to appreciate his talent, his heart, and his passions. The 'Edward G Robinson Encyclopedia' is organized as such. The various aspects of his life from A to Z are discussed in varying detail, and serve only to whet your appetite for further writings on his life. The lack of photographs is the only criticism that I have of this book, as photos would add much to the text. The listings in the book include his movies, his co-stars, the events in his life, his children, the studios, his influences, both professional and personal, and his amazing art collection. The first section presents a short biography and the last section contains a great bibliography. As with 'Back In The Saddle', The 'Edward G Robinson Encyclopedia' is available in My Book Store from Suite 101, online at www.mcfarlandpub.com, and from your favourite local book store!
