By the light of the August Moon...And on the Western Fiction Book Shelf We Find... The summer winds have blown quite mightily this month. From the acclaimed halls and minds of Dorchester Publishing, we find 4 new western novels to while your evenings and days away. In 'Born To The Brand', WWA founding member and legendary writer, D B Newton, gives us a collection of six novelettes and short stories drawn from his extensive body of work. From his first written work in 1928 (at the age of 12), he consumed literature and by 18 his first published piece was "Brand of the Hunted". With the help of a teaching editor, he honed his craft and landed the "Range Where Men Died Twice". "Born To the Brand" features stories from the post WWII period, and are characteristic of Newton's work. Enjoyable, action filled, and character driven, are phrases that can be used to summarize these stories. "Born To The Brand" is more of a personal journey through the best writing years of his pulp life. Each story is prefaced with personal comments and reading this book is like an extended campfire with one of our own. Try and just read ONE story, just try... Johnny D Boggs, Spur Award winner, has given us "Lonely Trumpet", the story of Lieutenant H O Flipper and an army conspiracy designed to strip the first ex-slave and the first black officer of any honor and respect. Captain Merritt Barber, convinced of his, Flipper's, innocence, comes to his side to help defend him against the powerful racial forces at work in the upper ranks. In this 'JAG' type novel (circa 1881), the world seems to come down on Lieutenant Flipper, until right conquers over wrong, and integrity conquers fear. Compelling, well written, and forceful, "Lonely Trumpet" will draw you in and make you choose sides. Look out world, this would make a great movie. Let's see, Denzel Washington as Flipper, Tommy Lee Jones as Barber? Hmmm? Hollywood take notice. David Thompson, author of The Wilderness series from Leisure Books, has produced a fascinating volume in "Scar". The 40th book, "Scar", deals with the protection of the Ute tribe and the efforts of 'Nate King' to track and kill a rampant Grizzly Bear. Delving into the life of the grizzly bear Scar, Thompson takes us into the psyche of the animal and parallels the motivations of King to stalk the animal. A great book in a series that should decorate book shelves of any western fan.
