Now that 2003 has begun, what better way for Welsh enthusiasts to kick off the new year than to start studying Welsh in earnest? If you're in need of some review, want to stretch your skills, or just want to start off at the beginning, I highly recommend the new Learn Welsh site at BBC Wales and Clwb Malu Cachu's Get Fluent! subscription service.
Get Fluent! Besides the already wonderful service the CMC site provides, webmaster Suw Charman now offers weekly practice worksheets via e-mail that cover vocabulary, grammar, and reading skills. Priced at £35 annually, this is a great opportunity to supplement your Welsh books or classes with themed exercises that challenge you to learn more every week. As you can see from the sample page provided, the learning materials provided are extensive and thorough. According to the site, each weekly e-mail will include "vocabulary, translation practice, short reading and comprehension exercises, a quiz or puzzle, as well as tasks you can do about the house to help you bring Welsh into your everyday life. You will be able to mark your own work the following week when answers are published." To me, one of the greatest advantages of this service is that it is conducted via e-mail, so Welsh students all over the world can benefit. Thanks to Suw for her hard work; and please give the site a look.
Learn Welsh at BBC Wales Not to worry, it's still as easy as ever to access the old Catchphrase, Cam Ymlaen and Dyma'r Newyddion segments. However, the new Learn Welsh site is especially user-friendly to those new to the site, who might not know where to start. In fact, I really can't say enough about the Learn Welsh main page. The simple "How's Your Welsh?" section enables anyone to quickly evaluate their level of language learning and recommends which sets of lessons are most appropriate to that stage of knowledge. In addition, the inclusion of language tools on the right-hand side of each page makes it easy to get help at one's fingertips. Tools include a spell-checker, a mutation checker, and a 60,000 word English-Welsh and Welsh-English online dictionary. The latter is sure to be especially useful as it contains audio clips of many common words, and also gives the option of showing you verb conjugations. There is also a comprehensive grammar guide in PDF format available to print out. Go To Page: 1 2
