I apologize for the non-instructional nature of this particular update, but in a few short days I'll be leaving to brush up on my language skills at Cymdeithas Madog's annual Welsh course. It's always an enjoyable experience, and I will of course return with a full report. In the meantime, I'm leaving you with a short description of what I'll be up to during the week of the course, plus updates on various online resources and a brief list of upcoming articles on this page.
Cwrs Cymraeg Cymdeithas Madog 2002. Cymdeithas Madog is the Welsh Studies Institute in North America, and this year's annual week-long Welsh course is being held July 21-28 at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. Appropriately enough, it's been titled "Y Cwrs Ar Y Paith"--The Course on the Prairie. Instructors from Wales include lead teacher Steve Morris, as well as Eleri Hughes and Mark Stonelake. They will be joined by North American staff Paul Birt, Meredith Roberts, Kara Lewis, and Kevin Rottet. The schedule promises a fun week of language instruction and activities such as pub night, choir, and the usual talent show. This year's field trip will be to the town of Lucas, Iowa. Lucas was the home of John Llewellyn Lewis, a prominent Welsh-American labor union advocate during the unionization movement. I promise to tell you more about my experiences at the course during my next update, and to have lots of hwyl brushing up on my Welsh language skills. CMC T-Shirts Now Available. Clwb Malu Cachu, an excellent web site and mailing list for Welsh learners, are now offering exclusive t-shirts with the CMC logo. Cotton t-shirts are available in men's and women's styles and in various colors for £12.50. Support this great site and display good fashion sense at the same time--click here for more info. Portable BBC Catchphrase. BBC Catchphrase's audio lessons are now available for purchase on CD or cassette. According to this week's Catchphrase newsletter: "Although postage costs outside the UK can sometimes be high, these resources are a real bargain. You can buy a triple pack and notes for only GBP6. If you contact Beryl or Mary at edupubw@bbc.co.uk, they can let you know more." Each lesson is around half an hour long, perfect for those long car trips. Highly recommended for beginners or advanced students. The Welsh Bible Online. The translation of the Bible into Welsh was a key event in the history of the language and its survival. It also offers a glimpse into the spiritual traditions of Wales and a direct example of why Welsh is called "the language of heaven." At Beibl.net, you can read the New Testament in Welsh or search by word or phrase. Meanwhile, at Gwefan Cymru-Catalonia, you can read a few books of both the New and Old Testaments in Welsh. Over the coming months, more will be added. Go To Page: 1 2
