It's getting around to that time of year-oh, who are we fooling; it's ALREADY that time of year-when you might well be looking for a unique and appropriate gift for someone you love. If you know someone with an interest in Welsh language or culture, or if you're putting together a wish list of your own, then perhaps you'll be inspired by some of the ideas to follow. Divided into Books, Software, Music/Movies, and Gifts, this list of web-shopping resources will make the gift-buying task a bit easier-for yourself, or for Siôn Corn, as Santa Claus is referred to in Welsh.
Llyfrau - Books
Firstly, if you've ever coveted any of the books posted on this site-either in an article or on the main topic page-you can visit the Welsh Language bookstore to browse these and many others. Grammar books, travel guides, dictionaries; books about music, fairy tales, and history...all are easily ordered from Amazon.com.
The preeminent source for Welsh and Welsh-interest books is the Welsh Books Council's search and ordering service, Gwales. Simply browse their many lists and suggestions, or search for a particular title, and order-I've had excellent experiences buying books from gwales.com, and my orders have arrived surprisingly quickly for something shipped overseas. Plus, their selection is huge.
I also highly suggest browsing the offerings of particular presses and publishers, such as Y Lolfa, Gomer Press, and Golwg Publications (publishers of the magazines Golwg and Lingo Newydd) for a variety of other publications. Or you could subscribe to a Welsh newspaper for the year-either a Welsh-language paper, such as Y Byd or Y Cymro, or a newspaper in English, such as the Welsh-American newspaper Ninnau.
If you're stuck on what to buy, you can browse past articles on this site, or visit the Gwybodiadur for lists of Welsh-learning resources
Meddalwedd - Software
You can, of course, buy software from many of the major booksellers (see above). In addition, if you're looking to purchase or download software that's actually IN Welsh, you have a few options. Firstly, thanks to Microsoft and the Welsh Language Board, you can now download (for free!) Welsh Language Interface Packs for Office 2003 and Windows XP, available here. The clearinghouse Meddal offers downloads of and/or links to a number of programs-many of them open-source-that are all in Welsh, such as OpenOffice and the browser Mozilla. Lastly, the software company MEU Cymru has educational software for children in Welsh, as well as lots of Welsh fonts for sale.
