Didn't Bill Murray say that a few times?
I daresay I have beaten THIS subject to a furry pulp in pulling up the Wild Things part of my topic each year. ONE of the years, if you go back through all the various GroundHog Day articles I've written,
http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/631/... http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/631/... http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/631/... http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/631/... we all lost our minds in Scribbles with concocting Ground Hog Day Carols. And we did PRETTY well, I must say. But, boys and girls, I do believe we hath been OutHogged by THIS character.......one Donald Halley. Right over the top (or right into the hole) and according to all the copyright dates, he's been AT this awhile.....The one he does flawlessly to the tune of the Star Spangled Banner ("The Frostbitten GroundHog") had my head on the keyboard. Who says a marmot can't bring out the BEST in us??? This collection of parodies goes on FOREVER, ending with....."You ain't nothin' but a GroundHog, sleepin' all the time"...... It's the TIME OF YEAR, I'm TELLIN' ya!!! We've all got cabin fever. I don't know about the rest of you inhabitants of planet earth, but I've had quite ENOUGH of winter, thank you very much. The driveway where I live at the moment has not yet released the ICE we got early in DECEMBER!!!!. Enough. I want MUD. But when you think on it, it IS pretty funny that we WAIT for this ravenous rodent to come out and then we spend the rest of the season doing battle with it so it won't devour our gardens. But there are other things you can do with GroundHogs. I remember YEARS ago when my now-pregnant daughter was real small, we made a regular, lengthy trip to see a chiropractor and we would rate the day by the number of groundhogs we saw along the parkway. I believe a 23-Hog Day was our TOP. Actually, it's a trifle distressing how FEW hogs I've seen along that same parkway as twenty some-odd years have passed. I don't think it's necessarily a dearth of hogs so much as parkway grass has become quite inedible. Now, if you really want to get IN to all this, check this out so you can draw the lines between Chinese astronomy and Feb 2 as being the beginning of SPRING. Amazing. But by far, the best site I came across to make the connections between the silliness of GroundHog Day and the ancient days when the movements of the seasons were noted and honored was this one I DO actually remember a vaguely minor holiday from my days at Catholic School when we went to the Church and had our throats blessed with crossed candles. Yes, it WAS in February. St. Blaise's Day. It wasn't a huge deal, but kind of sweetly mysterious. Go To Page: 1 2
