A Fitful Winter's Nap

Perhaps it is because I am a babyboomer, circa 1951, that I have grown to believe that society, if not the world and quite possibly the universe, all revolve around US.

In WHICH case, the very PLANET is going through menopause, I just thought you'd like to know that.

Have you NOTICED how Bradford Pears go through the winter with one eye half-open? Anything remotely RESEMBLING a sunbeam causes those buds to raise their eyebrows. Willows are just as bad. They've got that one foot hangin' out from under the blanket thing goin', JUST in case things begin to get a little WARM.

Here in the Northeast US, our winter enemy isn't the BITTER cold (though that is giving us a run for our ice-melters right now) nor is it the TONNAGE of snow that other places get. No, here in the Hudson Valley it's the Freeze/Thaw/Freeze/Thaw thing that tears everything to pieces. Just like that Sleep/Wake/Sleep/Wake thing is starting to SHOW on my face.

As I drive around, I watch the narcoleptic waterfalls in the woods freeze to a stop and then, with the SLIGHTEST thaw, continue the sentence they were in the midst of. I KNOW the feeling.

Only of late have I seen the VAST difference between the wild plants and the LANDSCAPED plants. Carefully placed and manicured, the landscaped plants just STAND there. Give me a rosa multiflora, with its thorns and hips and exuberance ANY day. Why does everything look so different? Probably because I don't SLEEP anymore.

Didn't everything used to go dormant in the winter?? Snow was something you PLAYED in, and everything went to sleep. I don't know, but all the heads just aren't down on the desks here.

Maybe it has something to do with that other BoomerPhenom, mainly that Christmas starts the day after Halloween, and Valentine's Day starts Jan 2 and no one's paying NEARLY enough attention to Ground Hog Day. It's hard to say.

But wouldn't it be SOMEthing if the WEEDS and the WOMEN were all CRONING at the same time? Nobody's sleeping, everybody's changing, there's this Shrieking, Crackling, *FLASHING* sound and........(a HUSH falls over the crowd) there, standing before you is....WEEDWOMAN. Able to crack blacktop in a single NEUDGE. Able to feed the multitudes, heal the wounds, soothe the nerves, fight the plagues and keep on comin'.....she is SeaWeed, she is Dandelion, she is Nettles. You've been Pulling Her Out, Burning Her at the Stake, but she's baaaaaaack!
