A (Time Out) Bouquet on Earth Day

© Barbara Hall

I apologize for such a HUGE lapse between articles. You'd think the weeds and I had been asleep or something! Well, after three years of writing this topic and 8 cases of Lyme Disease, I have thought about laying THIS particular corner of Suite 101 down and pick up another, Women Beyond Forty, which would have commenced by the beginning of May. Although I am COMPLETELY recovered from this eighth round of Lyme, my need is to decrease my odds of going for a ninth, so I am no longer a professional gardener, which changes how I do my research.

I do hope, in the three years and something like sixty articles, that I have, with some fun and surprises, managed to share with you a certain new (or VERY old) appreciation of some of the WonderWeeds that you had, up to now thought were merely 'undesirables'.

It's hard to say the word WEED without smilin'. So now you know why *I* do. And here on Earth Day,2001 it seems as good a time as any to point you back to that three years' worth of writings (as I'm sure not a one of you could possibly have read them ALL, I'm even surprised I WROTE them all!)
with a strong reminder
that we do not live in an ECONOMY.
We do not REALLY live in COUNTRIES.
First and foremost,
we live on a PLANET.
A living,
breathing,
BALANCED (for the MOMENT, may we all be grateful)
BALL.
And if we continue
to abuse it,
USE IT UP,
control it,
pave it over,
poison it
and dishonor
the astonishing, life-giving wonder that it is,
Well, hear me clearly.
Nothing,
absolutely NOTHING
in the World (get it?)
Will matter any more.
Not your economies,
Not your 'bottom line'
Not your profit margins,
Not your manicured, chemical-soaked lawns.
It's a living lesson wrapped around us.
She is a patient Mother to us spoiled children
Who want what we want
and ARE NOT listening.
So to every last one of you
Who 'goes organic'
Starts a compost pile,
stops ONE MORE TREE from being destroyed
or hey, as I've been saying over here for THREE YEARS...
*SMILES* at a Dandelion
BELIEVE ME,
She HEARD that.
But making her smile through her pain
Just isn't going to be enough.
We need to try harder,
Because our very EXISTENCE depends on it.

I would not leave Weeds and Wild Things out of lack of interest, I have just SAID A LOT over here and desire to say something DIFFERENT. Bless Suite101 for allowing us to put up a body of work and have it remain even if we wander off elsewhere. I know that a lot of the links I've put up over the years have gone quiet and I will try to remedy that.

I feel like the "Prodigal Weed Returns". Guess I just needed to go 'dormant' for a bit.

I really DID start working on Women BEYOND Forty and worked hard on it, but I'm afraid my heart is truly HER ...
