Show any kid a plantain leaf. C'mon, you know what it is, it's right there in your lawn. A rosette of leathery leaves with very distinct veins running the length of the oval leaves. Yes, that's it, the one that send up the stalks of seeds in late summer. Show that kid how to bruise a leaf with a thumbnail and press it onto a mosquito bite and you have given that child a sense of power to care for themselves. With a weed. Go figure. I hope to take you all along on a fascinating journey past the things you bought in pots to the scrappy creatures who show up on their own in spite of your best efforts to eradicate them, because they're trying to get your attention.
