Prenuptual Agreements

Warning: The following article is completely editorial. It is also completely my opinion. I understand that you may not agree — I am speaking for me, not you, and not Suite 101.

I believe prenups are both a symptom and a catalyst of many of the marriages out there that do not work. I have talked to many people that argue a prenup is one of those things that can't harm and might help. Why not sign something that may make a potential split easier on both of you later on?

That's exactly why! When you sign a prenup — it's in case of divorce. If you go into a marriage planning your divorce, you'll be darn lucky to survive! Marriage is not an easy road. You'll have money problems, personality conflicts, dirty diapers. You may have to move away from your family, friends, and job. You'll most likely look at someone else and find yourself terribly attracted to him or her. You may play "what if" when thinking about ex-loves. These are the things that make a good marriage. A good marriage stays together through these obstacles. A marriage should not be taken lightly.

Listen to the couples that you admire talk. Can you imagine one without the other? They are whole people — but they are even more as a couple. Personally, I believe that considering a prenup should also lead you to consider your commitment. If the commitment and love are there — don't ever forget show it, even on those rocky times.

Garth Brooks recently talked about the rough time with his wife (this is a terrible paraphrase). He said that often the same rocks that you stumble over are the one that you have to hang on to keep a relationship going. Know going in that it will be hard. It is often these experiences that create your history and deepen your commitment.

I'll step off my soapbox now.

Have a fabulous Valentine's Day.
