Choosing Your Dress

I believe that the dress is the best place to start when planning a wedding. This is one of the most difficult decisions. Almost every woman has a vision in her head of her wedding day-- and most of these include the fabulous gown that makes everyone in the room gasp. You may have a barbie doll image of satin and bows, southern charm in ruffles, simple elegance in grandma's lace, sophistication in a pantsuit, or a fairy tale trane. It may take some time to make reality mesh with those dreams!

You have many choices when it comes to dresses. Depending on your price range and style preferences you have different choices. You can scout out family and friends for the perfect dress--This is a good way to find a classic or a sentimental dress at only alteration (which can be high) cost.

You can rent a dress if you can't afford the high cost of high fashion. This is also an option if you don't attach yourself to the material objects of your big days. Do think about whether you are they type to pull out the dress and reminisce--or whether you would like your daughter to wear your dress--BEFORE you choose this route.

You can also go to the classifieds. This is an inexpensive way to find a dress that you can keep. There are two drawbacks to this plan--1. You can't see everything in an ad and is not practical to visit the house of every advertiser. 2.You may not want to use a dress that didn't work the first time around.

Bridal stores offer a large selection and are often willing to work with you. However, sometimes it's hard to find a dress without bow on the butt disease here--nice for some--but not for me!

Search the magazines. You just might find what you have been dreaming of--and the price and location are usually right in front of you. My favorite part of these was the ads--I'd clip my favorites so I always had a handy reference of the styles in my dreams.

Sew your own--or find someone to do it for you. Given the materials and accessories needed, this is more expensive than it sounds. However, if you know the talent, you can put together the dress made the pieces you have ripped out of the bridal magazines!

Do the unexpected. If you are a bit on the wild side, or turned off by everything you've seen--
