Prepare for Disaster!

Does that sound harsh? Maybe it is, but it is also a reality. Think of how exaggerated each of your emotions become when involved in planning a wedding. Now imagine a real problem coming up - I'm not talking about the wrong champagne or a popped button on a dress. How would you handle a real problem? They happen more often than we would like to admit.

I went to a cousin's wedding recently - beautiful and beautifully planned. She had sent the entire out of town family to the same hotel. When we arrived there were bags with maps of Chicago, directions to local stores (including the ones they registered at) and even handkerchiefs (which my mother forgot - but they would have come in handy.

On the day of the wedding there was a car fire on a major incoming highway. The wedding was delayed while the unlucky guests waited in traffic. Everyone else had a chance to admire the bridesmaids, talk to family and read the program.

At the reception things seemed to be going great. There was an open bar and dinner was served family style. The bride and groom again had planned every detail as the toast and dances proceeded right on schedule. As the newlyweds danced, it was obvious that they had even taken dance lessons to prepare for the big day (OK, they rented a video, but it was more than I did). Finally, it was time for family pictures and people started to gather. That's when the lights flickered. Then they went out. Each table was left with one candle, the a/c was definitely a casualty, and the DJ couldn't jockey. With some quick thinking, the DJ's were sent out for a generator. The room was hot and the lights were low - but a spotlight and music made the party a success until the lights came on - almost three hours later.

How should you prepare? Try to think of a solution to every possible problem while you are still sane. Next, delegate beforehand. "Mom, if there's a problem with the food, would you take care of it?" "Dad, would you make sure the temperature is always comfortable?" You get the picture - being prepared will allow you to more fully enjoy the moment.
