Dr. William Gray is arguably the most well known name in tropical cyclone prediction. Every year, the world eagerly awaits his forecast for the Atlantic Basin hurricane season. This year, his initial forecast has changed a bit, and his updated version is: Ten named storms, including six hurricanes and two intense hurricanes.

Gray also predicted an increased risk of at least one landfalling hurricane hitting the United States, particularly along the East Coast and Florida as opposed to the Gulf Coast.

The numbers are slightly different from the December outlook, which called for nine named storms, five hurricanes and two intense hurricanes.

Bottom line: Gray is calling for an average year for tropical cyclones. The season officially runs from June 1 through November 30.
