Parade ducks the rain

One of New Orleans' most decadent parades decided to roll early this year, after the skies threatened to open up.

Krewe of Endymion Captain Ed Muniz announced the festivities would begin at 3:45 p.m. instead of the usual 5:00 p.m. start time.

Mayor Marc Morial said he is pleased with the decision made in conjunction with city officials.

"Moving it up about one hour was preferable to rescheduling it," Morial reportedly told The Times-Picayune.

Had Endymion been postponed to Mardi Gras day, it would likely not have been up to par with past years. Many of the 40-plus bands and marching groups from out of town would not have been able to participate Tuesday. There was a danger of hundreds of the more than 2,000 riders abandoning the festivities as well.
