Buffalo breaks a record

One hundred inches. It doesn't sound like much by Buffalo standards, but New York state's snow hub has broken a record.

Thursday, January 4, at 10a.m. EST, a lake effect snow band topped off the snow total with 3.1 inches, bringing it up to 100 inches.

This is the earliest Buffalo has ever reached the century mark. The previous record arrived on January 7, 1977, a year known for its storms.

Aside from hitting an official milestone, the storm meant the 19th consecutive day with measurable snowfall at the Buffalo International Airport. And the action didn't stop there.

The snowfall continued as forecasters waited to see if Mother Nature would out do herself. The current record stands at 28 consecutive days, and was set back in January of 1977.

The snow tally for the season thus far is triple the average of 38.6. A year ago on January 4, 13.6 inches had fallen, and the ground was bare.
