Winter is back

After three years of mild winters, the big chill is back!

"We've probably forgotten over the last three years what a normal winter is like," said NOAA Administrator D. James Baker. "With La Niña and El Niño out of the way, normal winter weather has a chance to return to the U.S. this year."

The Northeast's first major snow storm of the season hit over the weekend bringing snow totals of more than two feet in some areas. New York's La Guardia Airport, JFK International airport, and even New Jersey's Newark International Airport were forced to shut down as Old Man Winter sent more snow than they could handle.

A few New Jersey counties declared a state of emergency because of the excessive snow, and several records were broken across the region.

Newark, NJ, saw 13.7 inches of snow, while Bridgeport, Conn., came in at 9 inches. Central Park in New York City got 11 inches, breaking the day's previous record, which was a measly 2.9.

The wintry weather is thanks to the exit of La Niña, prevailing cooler temperatures in the eastern and tropical Pacific which serve to influence weather patterns. Now that neutral conditions are around, the U.S. is seeing a more typical winter.

How to make a paper snowflake

  • You’ll need a square sheet of paper. Remember, a square has 4 equal sides.

  • Fold it in half. Mark the center point along the fold.

  • Divide into three equal 60 degree angles, using a protractor if necessary. Then mark lines at each 60 degrees radiating from the center point.

  • Fold left side toward center on left side penciled line. Fold right side toward center on right side penciled line. Your paper will look like a triangle with excess at the base.

  • Cut straight across your triangle’s base to get rid of excess. Now your paper will look like a perfect triangle

  • Cut out a designs along the edges, leaving some of the folded edges uncut.

  • Unfold your design.

  • Your snowflake will have 6 points, just like the real thing!
