With the heat increasing in many areas it is time to start setting up those water features.
This is especially the case if your water garden is inhabited by fish. As the water
temperature rises, the oxygen level falls making water flow important. Gasping fish at
the surface is a major sign of low oxygen levels. This can of course harm your fish. Now
is also a good time to see if your pumps are indeed still working. A hot day with gasping
fish is not the time to be rushing around trying to replace a broken pump. If you properly
stored your pump everything should go fine. Give it a good cleaning and replace any
filter material that has become too degraded. Quilt batting, while a good medium, has been making its way into pump workings with bad results.
Look at your fish. Are they flashing or acting as if they are being attached by parasites? Is the water warm enough to feed them again (check your aquatic thermometer for feeding suggestions)? Are they looking hungry and eating the food you toss them? Are there any babies? If so, will your pond support the new fish load? These are just some of the questions you should be asking yourself. You also might be able to start adding hardy plants. Prior to doing this, look to see if your fish need a bit of salt to stave off parasites. Simple aquarium salt (not table salt which contains anti-clumping additives which are harmful to fish) can do wonders for your fishes health. Be sure to do small water changes so the salt is back to a level safe for plants before starting with replanting. As with any type of garden not everything is going to survive. This makes for a great time to look around and plan what plant will go where. Also look to see if your water falls or fountains are in a good spot. Now may be the time to move them. You may even want to start a new pond. Many with the pond bug can't stop themselves. When you have koi it is quite easy to become disgusted with their destructive behavior towards plants. Another horror is the majestic Apple Snail. So instead of just throwing up your hands and excepting it why not build a separate little pond? Include two small goldfish or minnows to keep mosquitoes in check. Starting something new, even when it is on a small scale, can really revive your love of water gardening. As the water gets to the optimal temperature of 70 F you might have tropicals on the Go To Page: 1 2
