The Journey

Hi! Where'd you come from? The next shelf up, huh? Wow! I've heard about that happening, but never seen it myself. It's like you just trickled in from nowhere! I mean, one minute you weren't there and the next - slurp - and there you were!

Well, today's the big day, huh? It seems like it took forever to get to the edge of the snowpack. Or I guess I should say, for the edge of the snowpack to get to us. But here it is. Should be only a few hours now. When the sun gets past those trees we would start to warm up a little and then - well, you know. We're off on the journey! I'm so excited I can hardly contain myself. Last night I nearly merged with my neighbor and I would have ended up going with that big group that left this morning on the iceflow that broke loose. I guess that wouldn't have been so bad, but I've always wanted to take the solo journey, you know? One drop, out on his own, down the rivlet to the brook and from there to the stream, then into the river and finally to the lake. And if I'm really lucky, I'll make it through the lake to the lower falls and from there, downstream to the sea. I know it's a lot to ask for, but I can hope, can't I?

Wow, look at the sun. Maybe just one more hour to go and we'll be on our way. Hey, I know! Why don't we try to stick together, at least as far as we can, and see where we end up? I hear if you make it all the way to the sea, you can choose whether to go deep and do a little exploring, or head for the surface to take a trip into the sky. Yeah, I know, it means evaporating, but hey, that's what life's all about, isn't it? And they say most get to come back and make the trip again if they want. I don't know if I'd enjoy falling all the way from those clouds up there, but then again, it wouldn't be so bad especially if I got to come down slowly as part of a snowflake. How about you? Any plans for the journey?

Oh, wait a minute. I feel kinda funny. Something's happening. I think I'm separating from the snowpack. I feel kind of, oh I don't know, loose like. Maybe this is it. How do you feel? I'm not sure but I think it's almost time. I'm kind of scared and excited at the same time. Think of all those sights we're gonna see. The little rocks and the river eddies. And if it's a really good year, we should have high waters and an especially turbulent ride over the falls. Wow, I think this is it. Here I go....
