Road Trip East to a Couple of LakesThere are some places to eat, but I can't vouch for them. Before you go you may want to stop in Deer Park north of Spokane. Though it doesn't look like much either inside or out, the downtown deli in Deer Park has a mean hamburger and homemade french fries and onion rings. From what I saw coming out of the kitchen there's a lot more there than meets the eye. There's also a deli with an old-fashioned soda fountain and espresso a few blocks away. We had some excellent clam chowder and deli sandwiches there. My old-fashioned lemon-lime soda was great! There's also a McDonald's before you get to the old part of town. We stumbled onto Long Lake, http://www.avistautilities.com/resources...> , on another drive. What a surprise. There is a dam overlook at the far end of the lake that will take your breath away. Take a picnic, as there is an area near the overlook where you can stop and enjoy yourself. Somewhere near the lake there are Indian Painted Rocks known as Long Lake Pictographs (in the National Historic Register), but I don't know where they are located and the address says restricted. The other end of the lake is at Tum Tum, Washington. What a neat little town and there is a small resort for fishing there. The lake is crystal clear and across the highway there is a hay field on the hill that is a beautiful contrast to the lake. Tum Tum was the name of my high school annual, so I was surprised to learn there is actually a town with the same name. You may want to check out this site at Tum Tum: http://heartsongretreats.org/ - sounds like a place to go to get away from the madding crowd! To get there leave Spokane via Highway 291 past Riverside Park and the Nine Mile Falls area - another lovely view on your way; there is actually a pretty waterfall - and Nine Mile Falls is a small town you'll pass through. It looks
