Skagit Valley Tulip Festival

The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival is in full bloom beginning Friday, as folks who live in Washington are well aware. There's so much going on I'll highlight some events and sights in the area. Most of these events are April 5-20, 2002, and are in the Skagit Valley, halfway between Seattle and Vancouver, B.C.

As you travel I-5 in northern Washington from Anacortes to Mt. Vernon you will see the glorious tulip fields and know this is tulip season. What you might not know, however, is that there are a lot of fun things going on to celebrate the tulip season in our local communities in Skagit County.

The Arts

Anacortes is sponsoring a Quilt Walk; follow the quilted tulip signs on Commercial Avenue to see the quilts. (Those of you that quilt are probably familiar with the Gaches Mansion in La Conner, home of the Quilt Museum.) Beaver Marsh Road in Mt. Vernon is the place to take in the Art Bash. At the same time the Rexville Grange will be transformed into the Pleasant Ridge Gallery. This next weekend take in the Woodfest at Sedro Woolley - lots of talented artists will be there with their wares. Add Art in a Pickle Barn to those events and your artistic bent should be satisfied.

Life on the Farm

At the same time Sedro Woolley invites you to visit a herd of bison. Conway is catering to families who want to experience life on a farm by holding farm tours. You may not only pet cows at their Cow Town, but pet baby chickens, rabbits, goats, calves and more.

Tulips and Tasty Treats

Want to see the flower fields overhead? Then take a flower flight and you'll view the colorful fields from above. April 12-16, take in Washington Mutual's Country Fair at Edgewater Park and get some barbecued salmon. Yum!

More Events

All the above events and more are at http://www.tulipfestival.org . Click on events at the top and you'll see an impressive amount of community happenings this time of year. Folks in Washington State really have community spirit and there really isn't enough time in one day to get around to all of the communities to participate in the fun.

One of my Favorite Towns

If you happen to be in La Conner on April 13 the Skagit Symphony is playing. La Conner is a town to spend a day in - and more. Set along the Swinomish Channel it's on the National Register of Historic Places. Sitting strategically between the tulip fields and the San Juan Islands, it's got a northwest feel that gets to your heart once you get downtown to visit the quaint shops or eat in some great restaurants. I particularly like the Calico Cupboard Café and Bakery; the food is awesome.
