Places to Go and Things to Do in 2002 - Part II
Visit the Seattle Boat Show and Boats Afloat Show Two big boat shows combine this year. The Seattle Boat Show with over 1,000 boats, sponsored by Northwest Marine Trade, is going on January 11-20 at the Stadium Exhibition Hall across from Safeco Field. Every type of boat imaginable will be there (okay, not ferry boats) along with eager exhibitors. Sign up to win a free boat! You may buy tickets online. The Boats Afloat Show on the south end of Lake Union has teamed up with the Seattle show and runs on the same dates - shuttle busses are provided to and from each show. See some shoreside exhibits at this exciting show on the lake. Tickets are available at the show. Washingtonians boat all year long. This is a big thing in our state, even in eastern Washington. We used to hang out at the shows, but haven't in a while. We have a memory of one long ago when my husband accidentally kicked our eldest daughter in the mouth (not knowing she was behind him when he was climbing up a ladder into a yacht - she was about six). Her lip bled all over her yellow sunday school dress before we got first aid help! She's never let him forget it. It's the only memory that sticks right now - I never won a boat! If you're not into hanging out with a bunch of folks looking at a bunch of beautiful boats, then check the next activity out. The Naval Undersea Museum at Keyport, Washington, holds the largest collection of naval undersea artifacts in the United States. See torpedoes, a confederate mine from the civil war, remotely operated vehicles and other items too extensive to list. Marine science, Naval history and undersea technology combine to educate visitors in its 20,000 square feet building. You'll see submersibles and may participate in hands-on activities. Saturday, February 23, there's a special free hands-on science activity day for children six to fourteen from 10-2 a.m. It's just about a mile away from where we bought our first home between Silverdale and Poulsbo. For more information and directions visit http://num.kpt.nuwc.navy.mil - you'll be astounded at what awaits you. Admission is free.
