Fall in Olympia and Lacey
Probably not pretty colors. Landfills are landfills, right? Who even wants to look at 'em? This Washington State landfill, however, is in disguise all-year-round. It's a great view all the time, but this fall it sports its lovely burning bushes in full bloom. Cities have come a long way on this issue, hmm? Since tomorrow's Halloween I thought I'd leave you with a lovely display in a downtown Olympia store, Compass Rose (below). I'm not sure how this store settled on a name, but Bill Thoen wrote an interesting essay on the Compass Rose, a nautical figure. Tomorrow I'm going to Olympia again to just walk around town and enjoy the sights. The Capitol city is known for more than state government buildings. It has an eclectic downtown that is just wonderful for browsing and people watching. It's worth a day's drive to take in the myriad stores if you're gift, art or clothes shopping. Gift stores like The Archibald Sisters, Pizzaz Gift Baskets and Gifts, Drees, the Popinjay, etc. - Clothing stores like Dorias, Jinjor, etc. Art galleries such as Childhood's End Gallery, Gallery Fourth Avenue, Artist's Co-op Gallery. Olympia has more than its share of galleries. You may want to even take in an evening event while you're in town. Oops, I almost forgot about the Olympia Guitars store I drooled over today. They have such pretty guitars. I've been toying with picking up my ukelele (haven't done much with it for years and sold my piano), then belting out some tunes for fun - for me, of course. Maybe my grandchildren. I'd never let you hear me, though! The next step up is a guitar. Who knows? But not this fall. Too much on my plate. Olympia's downtown is a beautiful environment to just hang out in, especially when the downtown Farmer's Market is open on the week-ends (through December). Take in a fall walk at nearby Percival Landing on the water on a sunny day, then up through town, wheelchair suitable. Wrap up for the cold, expect rain, but enjoy yourself. Get on over to Batdorf and Bronson by the market to taste some great local coffee, too. The market and downtown are all close enough it's a walker's dream. I hope you enjoyed a visual tour this week around a Washington community. My travels
