Fall in Olympia and Lacey

© Jerri Brooker

Today as the sun creeps out after our first northwest Washington storm, my muse takes me to out to find fall. But only after I spend about ten minutes collecting fallen bark from a Madrona tree in our backyard for a project I want to do. A piece blew up on the deck and caught my eye yesterday so now there are more pieces drying on my dining room table.

Since the majority of you told me you like the changing colors of fall in my recent poll, I thought I'd share some western Washington colors with you. Join me, won't you?

Fall brings the best out in me. I find myself ready to tackle jobs I've put off, ready to write more, ready to let my artist side take hold and see where it leads me. I shoot photos with my new Nikon digital camera to help form a picture of what fall means to me here in Washington State. The evergreens tower over the colorful deciduous trees sporting bright red leaves between a residential and industrial area.

As I drive around and shoot photos I stop at The Tea Lady in Olympia and pick up several kinds of Rooibos (pronounced "roy bose") Tea to try. Our "Tea Enthusiast" writer, Candie Yoder, has my curiosity in gear (another fall whim of mine - to try and learn new things). Visit her site at http://www.suite101.com/welcome.cfm/tea_... - I've already learned so much. Rooibos is not really a tea as in tea leaf. Candie will explain if you check her Rooibos article.

While at The Tea Lady store (pictured above) I meet Sally Parke and also learn about Sporttea from a customer (another Olympia retail worker). Sandy gives me some, chilled, how the locals like it. Yum. I may be hooked. It's a Ginseng, Vitamin C and Electrolytes tea from LPP out of Englewood, Colorado. I share a bit with my sister at her office in town. Now my day's in full swing.

Since trees are some of my favorite things, I enjoy the vibrant colors of the deciduous trees on a city neighborhood street close to downtown Olympia: reds, yellows, browns, fading greens. What could be more beautiful than the fall colors stretching out over your head?

Fall is everywhere. There's a spot of Interstate 5 that has the most beautiful eclectic fall colors, but I haven't yet figured out how to film it. If you're in the Lacey area on I-5 it's around the Sleater-Kinney exit (towards South Sound Mall). Our Department of Transportation does a great job of making our freeways beautiful. They shine in fall.
