Favorite Spring Things

© Jerri Brooker

Thought I'd have some fun this week. Join me, won't you?

Spring things: flowers, day trips, great food, picnics.

Sound good?

What are your favorite things in spring? Family, sightsee, visit the country?

You tell me.

Meanwhile, here are my favorite spring things in Washington State (no special order):

(1)Cows. I found this guy on one of my jaunts around the state. Held up traffic to take a photo!

(2) Rhubarb Crisp. Yum! My favorite spring recipe when rhubarb is available (now, here):

Crumb Topping:

1 cup flour
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 cup melted margarine
1 c brown sugar
3/4 cup oats

Mix and press half into a 9-inch pan. Save the other half for topping.

Fruit mixture:

5 c. diced rhubarb
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup water
2 T. cornstarch
1 cup sugar

Mix everything but the rhubarb. I use a whisk to mix it, then thicken it in the microwave and whisk more (cook until clear and thickened.) May do on the stove; be sure to stir well while it's cooking.

Pour the cooked rhubarb mixture over the crust and sprinkle with remaining topping. Bake at 350 degrees for one hour. Serve warm, cut in squares. Serves 9.

(3) Daffodils. Gotta love 'em! Yellow and sunny.
They are the true picture of spring happiness for me.

(4) Volksmarches with my husband. I love to walk and I get involved in Volksmarches. I recently did one at Dupont, a small town near Tacoma. I'll introduce you to it later.

Want to know about Volksmarches? Visit http://www.ava.org/walk/wa.htm - find out about walks (volksmarches) all over Washington State. Join in. You usually get a good view of surrounding country and meet more walkers; they come from all over the world. A lot of the walks are wheel-chair suitable, though there are more difficult ones if you choose. Join a club or just have fun walking. Earn patches, buy pins, etc.

(5) My grandchildren visiting on spring break! I do a lot of playing and less working when they're here, so it's a vacation for us all. I especially like days at the beach or picnics in the park. Last year we visited four parks in one day - it was fun! What's your favorite park?

Just finished a visit with my grandchildren. This year we went to a children's museum and had a wonderful day at the beach, picnic and all. Be a kid again!

We went to the movie, Spy Kids. I was expecting to just "be there," but it was actually a fun movie and I enjoyed it with the kids. It's a great family movie, so don't miss it. I guarantee there's something for everyone (Antonio Banderas, now that's something to look at!)
