The Roslyn Cemetery holds more history and memories of the town and past residents. Five thousand-plus graves represent 24 nationalities that lived in this onetime 6,000-plus-populated town (1998 population was 857). This included the first black woman schoolteacher in Washington, Mrs. Thelma DeWittig. She followed the black migration of folks who came to work in the coal mines. Mining ended in the town in 1963 when other sources of energy competed with coal. The economy of Roslyn could no longer afford the mines. Four-fifths of the original coal deposits still remain today. The town has a new claim to fame that takes off in another direction: the recent "Northern Exposure" television series (now in rerun mode). Check out the script of the first episode at this site. You might want to sign or view Mark Style's guestbook at this site. Tourists, while you are learning the town history or reliving your take on "Northern Exposure", you may want to stay at the Hummingbird Inn, a Roslyn Bed and Breakfast (B&B). Another great choice just up the street from the museum is The Huckleberry House, also a B&B. There's also a delightful little cabin that sleeps three a mile out of Roslyn. Find out about it at http://vrbo.com/vrbo/3458.htm - another good choice. Take a jaunt to Cicely's Gift Shop, or buy a souvenir on the internet.
The Roslyn Brewing Company is a sight you won't want to miss as you're walking around town. It wasn't open the day we were there.
There are lots of "Northern Exposure" sites on the Internet with all kinds of pictures and stories. I chose the ones I did to enhance my look at Roslyn. If interested in more, just do a search and you will be busy the rest of the day; there are tons of "Northern Exposure" fans with their own take on Cicely, Alaska (downtown view).
Or is that Roslyn, Washington? Travel to Eastern Washington and see for yourself. You might be surprised at what you find. Copyright 2000, Jerri Brooker>
