If you want to see some Native Art live get ready to attend the 36th annual Speelyi-Mi Indian Arts and Crafts Fair March 11-12 to get a taste of the town's culture. Click on Year 2000 Events at this link, where you can hear some great banjo music. The accommodations in town are sparse, so you may want to make reservations now. The city sites are not always open, so be sure to check dates and hours. For sure, take in the 4th of July Toppenish Pow Wow and Rodeo which includes a Wild West Parade, a 300+ Indian Teepee Village and Pioneer Fair. Yippee! While in town take a good look at the Liberty Theatre. It was built in 1915 as the "Lois" and was part of the four theatre, 32 bar, 13 houses-of-ill-repute rocking community in 1915. Howard Hughes bought it in 1931. Lillian Gish and Tex Ritter and his horse were some of the star attractions in its heyday. Ahh, the romance of it all! If all this partying and playing gets you in the mood for some quieter fun, go down the road south for six miles to the Toppenish National Wildlife Refuge where 250 species of birds have been sighted. Sounds like a good idea to me! Enjoy yourself in this western town of today. Copyright 2000, Jerri Brooker
