The Wonders of Westport

As you drive towards town be sure to stop at Brady's Oysters to buy some fresh seafood. There are some great links here, too, including oyster recipes. They have a world-famous oyster feed once a year. (Brady's says you don't need Viagra if you eat oysters!) My Dad purchases tiny oysters here every year for an oyster stew feed at my brother's Christmas Eve.

The first Westport site I mentioned with all the photos also has an event calendar. It has not been updated for the Year 2000, but you can get an idea of what goes on around town during the year.

My Dad and I stumbled onto the last day of the International Nautical Chain Saw Carving event last year. It was amazing; I have seen lots of chainsaw carving and consider this the prime event of its type in the state. You won't believe your eyes when you view the beautiful carved art. Don't miss it. Expect the small town to be packed.

It's held in the town parking lot behind all the Westhaven Drive businesses. I can't remember the name of the drive-in across the street, but they serve some great fish and chips and hamburgers. Also check out the Italian place in town for some great clam chowder of incredible proportions, my husband tells me.

Be sure to take the foot ferry across the bay to Ocean Shores and look around. Also, when it's in port, see the Lady Washington, a wooden replica of the square-rigger ship used by Captain Gray on his 1792 voyage. Get your sea legs on. They offer day cruises with skits of life as an 18th century sailor. The ship is normally housed in Aberdeen at the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport.

I'm winding down for now. I'll be back to visit again. If you follow the links you will know how I feel when I go to visit. I love three favorite places on the Pacific Ocean (Kalaloch, Long Beach and Westport). Hope you've enjoyed your tour of this special place.

If you do get to WA I'd sure like to meet you. I hope you can come and see Westport. It is not a big, glitzy, touristy town like some. It still has the flavor of a small town - just enough shops to ...
