Holiday Spirit in Lacey, Washington

The place is decorated to fit the occasion. Staff bakes dessert and brings it to share; they also mingle and visit with the guests during dinner, some of whom may live in nursing homes and get a rare outing too infrequently. Satsch even provides transportation if needed.

The employees participate and give of themselves, too. That's the great part. They are happy to be a part of the occasion, says Grantham. A part of the Dairy Queen family last year, Grantham helped at the 1998 dinner and still remembers it fondly. He writes a lovely story to share with us all.

This is what Christmas is all about. Sharing the spirit with family and friends. For those of you who will not be with family, there are lots of places that need volunteers for the holiday. Join in a family of another kind at your local holiday dinners given by lots of organizations for those less fortunate. Check your newspaper to see how you can help. Since I am in the Lacey area today, the local Salvation Army is a start. You can reach them at http://www.salvationarmyolympia.org. Your community probably has a similar affair going on. Join the family of giving.

Family doesn't have to be related. Family is who you choose. Friends can be family, as family can be friends. Our world is so diverse, with many folks and many celebrations this time of year. I hope you have occasion to celebrate this year with your family of choice.

It's a big world, but one lady in Lacey, Washington, is making it a bit smaller and happier for senior recipients of her holiday gift of family and food.
