Holiday Spirit in Lacey, Washington

A Christmas never passes but I am once again reminded of what a wonderful world we live in full of angels on earth. The holiday spirit is in the air. It gets me every time.

Some folks complain about the commerciality of Christmas. That is a factor in our fast-paced society of supermalls and discount stores, no doubt. But looking beyond that, the spirit present when folks are going about their business of Christmas is what really gets to me this time of year. Amidst all the trappings, there's an inner spirit that comes to the center of the activities and adds a character that can't be beat. You can feel it in the air. Those of you who celebrate Christmas know what I am talking about.

One Washington State citizen (there are others all over the world, but one is who I write about today) is creating a little bit of happiness for others as I write. Unobserved as she goes about her business of making the holiday a great one for those less fortunate, she is what this life is all about.

What's so special: folks like her never expect to be be noticed. They just do what they do because of who they are. I just love to hear about these folks.

As I read The Olympian newspaper on December 10 I was really touched by an article written by Ben Grantham about a Lacey, Washington, Dairy Queen owner, Marjie Stasch. She prepares a meal in her fast food restaurant for Christmas Eve; her guests are senior citizens.

Grantham states, "Marjie Stasch, the owner, invites elderly people who are low-income or have no family to come to Dairy Queen for a four-course meal, including turkey, salads, mashed potatoes and rolls provided by Gai's Bakery, along with desserts provided by the staff." According to Gratham, she feels lots of others in need get cared for, but seniors don't always get attention at this time. She invites them to eat. She cooks. Her staff cooks. They have a great party.

The owner bears the expenses.

I can smell Christmas in the air as I continue to read all about the affair, which has been going on since 1995. The owner, according to Grantham, shuts the place down at 1 p.m. on Christmas Eve and starts the preparation for the dinner. The trappings of the holiday waft through the air in a joyous celebration for a senior family Stasch has invited to her table on Christmas Eve - in a Dairy Queen, no less!
